Magnetophone

Just got the Magnetophone album on CD today.

Having lived with the music for about a month now and liked it I can now comment on the artwork/design work from Martin Andersen @ v23. Like the single before it, this is packaged in a regular ol' jewel case with a clear tray. The similar half U-card is employed again, adding to its unique look on the store shelves.

The "booklet" is a different matter altogether. Looking at it you'd think it's a thick cardboard CD single sleeve, a pocket to insert a CD into. However, no 5" CD will fit inside this sleeve. So, what's inside this sleeve? Well, the rest of the artwork and the album credits of course! You have to gently spread open the sleeve, insert your finger inside to support it so as not to bend it and then shine enough light in so you can read the tiny print.

Not sure who the woman in the bra is, she looks kinda angry or something. The Static Caravan and Earworm logos are on the back cover part of the U-card but the rumoured inclusion of a WORM49 catalog number is nowhere to be seen. It *is* filling the slot of Earworm Records' WORM49 in spirit however.

So, Magnetophone's album looks great and the music is something I can throw on at anytime and enjoy. I found it very good driving music. Even on constant repeat I do not tire of these "songs". If you gave the EP a shot and are wavering on the album, try it - it's quite a work of art.

This is 4AD's first "statement" under the new management and I'm sure Ivo would have enjoyed it too. I think this is the most daring 4AD release in years. I especially like the response this album is getting. Did you see the review in Wired? They loved it! Really good stuff...
